Is Your Mine Site Ready for the Upcoming Wet Season?

The past wet seasons resulted in flooding of many mine sites in the Bowen Basin causing damage to operations and environmental impacts associated with discharge of large volumes of potentially contaminated water. As a result, water management issues on mine sites have become a strong focus for the DERM.

Now is the time to prepare for the upcoming wet season to ensure that your water management system is effective. Mine sites should consider the following actions to prevent uncontrolled discharges:

►   run a water balance model to determine if the water management system will be able to cope with large volumes of water and to identify where improvements should be made;
►  maintain drainage channels, creek diversions, dams and spillways;
►  service all water sampling equipment;
►  ensure that all telemetry water quality equipment is operational;
►  check your water management plan is up to date and accurately reflects the current licence conditions in your Environmental Authority, including relevant discharge criteria; and
►  ensure that all regulated wastes are stored appropriately to prevent runoff.

If you would like technical advice on preparing for the upcoming wet season please feel free to call the friendly staff at McCollum Environmental in Mackay on (07) 4953 2700 or in Brisbane on (07) 3023 5045.
